What NOT to do when washing your face: 7 Common Mistakes to Avoid

You've probably done it hundreds of times. Washing your face is the first step in any skin care routine but without knowing it, you're most likely doing mistakes that many others do too.

Don't worry, we've got you covered because we'll go over these top 7 mistakes so you can avoid them!

1. Don't scrub too hard. You'll only irritate the skin and remove its natural oils.

It's tempting to go to town when exfoliating your skin - especially if there are some irritating spots you want get rid of!

Exfoliating your skin with a face scrub is great for removing dead skin cells but using too granular a product or scrubbing too hard will leave your skin irritated and even cause breakouts!

So, next time there's a Mount Vesuvius you want to remove, try taking a gentler approach.

Our Energising Face Scrub is a great way to achieve smoother skin without stripping or irritating it in the process. Its combination of vitamins and essential oils as well as its creamy texture leaves your skin rejuvenated and hydrated!

2. We all love a hot shower but if you want to avoid dry skin, keep it temperate on your face.

Don't go crazy with the hot water on your face as this can cause redness or irritation.

What's the ideal temperature? We recommend washing your face with lukewarm water.

Skincare products absorb most at this temperature while dirt can be removed from the skin without stripping the skin's natural oils.

3. You may think that harsh products are necessary for removing acne and wrinkles, but the truth is you can damage your skin in the process.

Alcohol-based products or stripping agents are often damaging to the skin because they are very drying and often cause inflammation.

Common ones found in skincare products are formaldehyde, polyethylene glycol (PEG), fragrance and parabens - so keep an eye out for these!

People with sensitive skin should be especially wary of using these ingredients.

It can be a hassle to scan every ingredient list so we made it easier for you by only using natural and nourishing ingredients in our skincare products - you won't be finding any nasty chemicals in our products!

4. We've already told you to be gentle on your face, but be really gentle around the eyes.

Don't rub around the delicate eye area as this can damage sensitive tissue. Dark under-eye circles, redness, puffiness and fine lines around the eyes are just a few examples of this skin damage!

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate of all your face. When you rub your eyes, you have the potential to harm the blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface.

The blood seeps into the surrounding tissue when the blood vessels breaks, giving your skin a bluish hue for a brief period.

It's a no brainer then that when washing your face, gently moving your fingers around your eyes is all that's needed!

To give this area some love - or to rescue some under eye bags you may already have - apply our Anti-Ageing Eye Gel around the eyes. This gel gently reduces the appearance of wrinkles, dark circles and other signs of ageing.

5. The way to a great complexion is simple and straightforward: don’t wash your face more than twice a day.

If you want the best for your skin, don't overdo the cleansing!

It's important to remove impurities but too can leave your skin dehydrated and dull.

We recommend washing your face in the morning because during the night environmental debris can build up on your skin. Any dead skin cells and bacteria already on your pillow case can collect on your face too.

And why in the evening?

When you're out and about in the day, dead skin cells, oil, germs and sweat build up on the surface of the skin. Particulate pollution (a type of air pollution) in the air can also cause the skin damage.

Plus, cleansing your skin means that your other skincare products can work more effectively because they're going onto a clean canvas.

So, if you're not fussed about the skincare benefits, then getting your money's worth might convince you to wash your face twice a day!

6. Don't rub, just dab.

A little tenderness goes a long way. When drying your face don't pull your skin with a towel as this can lead to premature ageing!

Instead, lightly dab your face until all the water is off your skin - a muslin cloth is even better to use on your skin than a towel.

7. Moisturiser is your skin's best friend.

Restoring the moisture in your skin is just as important as cleansing in your skin routine.

You want to avoid skin that feels tight and dry because this is prone to wrinkles and acne breakouts. Plus, dry skin is an open invitation for wrinkles and fine lines.

We recommend using our Oil Control Face Moisturiser for those with oily or acne-prone skin and for those with normal to dry skin, our Anti-Ageing Face Moisturiser is your ideal choice.

Wash away those dirty habits and cleanse your skin the right way.
